CS Health calls for paradigm shift in health governance to fight NCDs

Posted on : Tuesday, 30th August 2016

Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Cleopa Mailu has called for a paradigm shift in health governance, systems and financing to contain the rising cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) within the African Continent.

The CS disclosed that NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancers, have led to increased deaths and it is imperative for Africa to foster joint partnerships towards resilient and sustainable health systems for quality life.
The CS made the remarks at the TICAD VI Spouses Programme today in a speech read by the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Cecil Kariuki.

Dr. Mailu disclosed that maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria remain a challenge and are at the core of the global and African development agenda.

He lauded the First Ladies for successfully mobilizing resources to support the implementation of various programmes for socio-economic development.

In Kenya, he said, this has been demonstrated by H.E Margaret Kenyatta, who in her effort to improve maternal and child health launched the Beyond Zero Campaign three years ago.

‘’This initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of the national plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children, creating awareness and prevention of reproductive health cancers, bringing prenatal, postnatal and other reproductive health services closer to the mothers with a view to reducing maternal and child health’’, the CS emphasized.
